My mom and I both read this story with great enjoyment. In fact, Mom couldn't put it down and read way past her usual bedtime! It covers the years of her prime and she corroborated both the history (and there's lots of it) and the emotional atmosphere.I learned much I didn't know about the time and place...From the vicissitudes of life for poor farmers early in the 20th century to life in a college town in the 30s & 40s to the war at home in Chicago. The characters are fully realized and the story arc, which follows one family through the decades, kept my attention.
Be prepared for two types of plot interruptions: expanded history lessons and a subplot that involves a sprite-like being named Gamal whose interference in daily life and observations range from mischievous to evil. I found both diversions fascinating.

The News of the Day A Novel edition by S G Armstrong Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
I truly loved reading this novel (could not put it down once I started) and especially enjoyed how the history was so intricately interwoven with the plot. The characters were so well-developed that I felt like I knew them personally. It was really a great, fascinating book.
Amazing job! Enjoyed it very much.
This is quite an interesting historical novel. I appreciated the research that went into making the details historically accurate. The story gives a very personal look at life during the first half of the twentieth century for one mid western family. It is an enjoyable reading experience.
Description doesn’t mention how religious this book is.
The News of the Day reminds me of a classic. It builds up the characters extensively, so that when something happens, it's meaningful. The book also has a refreshing, powerful message, full of hope and lessons learned. I will be remembering this book for many years to come!
This novel takes the reader on a personal and historical trek of life as they experience sorrow, hope, change, and happiness throughout the time periods of the Great War, Prohibition, Depression, and concluding with World War II. If you are a history buff, you will enjoy reading about this particular family dealing with these difficult periods in history. See what they had to go through and the sacrifices they made to survive. It is evident in the story, that the author did extensive research to confirm the accuracy of the historical aspects shared throughout the work. A great read!
